INTRODUCTION
그냥 재미없고 평범하게 시작해보자면 독일 출신의 랄리 푸나(Lali Puna)는 포스트 일렉트로니카/팝 밴드로 분류되고 있다. 각종 수입 음반들과 라이센스 타이틀로 인해 국내에서도 비교적 널리 알려진 편으로, 주로 국내 뮤지션들이 자주 이들의 음악을 언급하곤 해왔다. 감각적인 실험 이외에도 목가적이고 서정적인 노스탈지아를 품은 멜로디를 통해 일렉트로닉 팝 씬의 가장 중요한 밴드로 자리매김하게 된다.
뮌헨근처에 있는 독일의 남부지방 바일하임에서 1998년도에 결성했다. 건반과 보컬을 담당하고 있는 발레리 트레벨야르(Valerie Trebeljahr)와 우리에겐 낫위스트(The Notwist)의 멤버로도 친숙한 마커스 아처(Markus Acher)를 중심으로 시작됐다. 이 둘은 부부관계이기도 한데, 랄리 푸나의 다른 멤버들을 제외한 채 존 요코(John Yoko)라는 이름으로 커버곡으로만 이루어진 7인치 싱글을 한 장 발표하기도 했다. 이 두 핵심멤버 이외에도 현재는 드럼의 크리스토프 브랜드너(Christoph Brandner)와 건반주자 크리스띠앙 하이스(Christian Heiß)로 구성되어있다. 2003년 무렵에는 건반주자 플로리안 짐머(Florian Zimmer)가 탈퇴했다. 마커스 아처와 크리스토프 브랜드너는 타이드 앤 티클드 트리오(Tied & Tickled Trio)로 활동하고 있기도 하다. 발레리 트레벨야르의 경우 한국인 입양아로 독일 뿐만 아니라 포르투갈에서도 꽤 오랜시간 거주하기도 했다. 그녀에 대한 자세한 사항은 웹진 웨이브(http://www.weiv.co.kr)와 함께한 인터뷰를 참조하면 되겠다.
발레리 트레벨야르의 밴드 L.B. 페이지(L.B.Page)가 해체한 이후, 4트랙 레코드로 혼자 작업하면서 마커스 아처와 함께하게 된다. 인터뷰에 의하면 크리스토프의 경우 시골에서의 생활이 무척 지루해 음악을 시작했다고 하고, 발레리 역시 취미생활 정도로 음악활동을 했단다. 이후 독일을 넘어 일렉트로닉 씬을 대표하는 베를린의 레이블 모르(Morr) 뮤직과 계약하면서 몇몇 EP들과 정규앨범을 발표했다.
1999년, [Tridecoder]로 데뷔했는데 스테레오랩(Stereolab) 등의 팬들에게 언급되면서 화제를 모았다. 약간의 권태를 머금고 있는 보컬은 왠지 모르게 따뜻한 전자음과 유기적으로 얽혀있는 형태를 띄었다. 이 어프로치는 무척 매력적인데, 이들의 음악을 단적으로 설명해주는 부분이기도 하다. 본 작을 통해 이들은 인디팝+일렉트로니카의 교배를 본격적으로 성공한 사례를 일궈낸 파이오니아가 된다.
2001년도에 발표한 두 번째 정규작 [Scary World Theory]의 제목은 조지 거브너(George Gerbner)의 이론에서 슬쩍해왔다고 한다. 모 딱히 제목 때문만은 아니지만 지적인 면모와 송 라이팅에 더욱 세심한 정성을 기울이면서 한단계 업그레이드된 모습을 보여줬다. 분명 일렉트로니카의 외형을 담고 있었지만 포스트록 팬들에게도 주로 언급되곤 했으며 ‘포스트 일렉트로닉 팝의 신기원’이라는 찬사를 얻어내기도 했다. 라디오헤드(Radiohead)의 톰 요크(Thom Yorke) 또한 극찬하면서 본격적으로 음악애호가들 사이에 알려지게 된다.
2004년 작이자 이들의 대표작 [Faking the Books]의 경우 국내에서도 라이센스되면서 본격적으로 이들을 국내에 알리는 계기가 됐다. 마이 블러디 발렌타인(My Bloody Valentine)을 연상시키는 몇몇 디스토션 걸린 노이즈를 바탕으로 사운드는 더욱 날이 섰으며 꾸준히 씬의 최첨단을 만들어 내면서 현재 진행형임을 각인시켰다. 락과의 적극적인 융합을 통해 좀더 친화적인 일렉트로닉 레코드를 완성해냈다.
비사이드 모음/리믹스 앨범인 [I Thought I Was Over That: Rare, Remixed and B-Sides]를 발매하면서 잠시 휴지기에 들어간다. 물론 멤버들의 다른 프로젝트 때문이기도 했지만 좀 더 확실한 이유는 발레리 트레벨야르의 임신과 육아 때문이었다. 사실 랄리 푸나의 내한공연이 [Faking the Books]의 라이센스가 발매될 당시 진행될 예정이었으나 발레리 트레벨야르의 임신때문에 무산된 바 있었다. ....  ....
