그루지야 티플리스(트빌리시) 출생. 가난한 아르메니아인 제본공(製本工)의 아들로 태어나 고향에서 일하다가 1921년 모스크바로 이사, 그네신음악원에 들어가서 첼로와 작곡을 배우고 1954년 소련 국민예술가, 1963년 아르메니아 과학아카데미아 회원이 되었다. 소련 평화위원회 회원으로 사회운동에도 참여하는 한편, 모스크바음악원, 그네신음악원의 교사로 후진 양성에 힘쓰고 지휘자로도 활약하였다. 대표작에 발레모음곡 《가이느》(3막 6장, 1942) 《스파르타쿠스》(4막 9장, 1954) 등이 있다.
