Although, Pungnyu has diverse meanings, its musical reference is defined as Jeongak like the Yeongsanhoesang and Gagok. Pungnyu is divided into Jul-Pungnyu, which considers Hyeonak Yeongsanhoesang(the string-Yeongsanhoesang) as its primary repertoire, and Geosangak and Dae-Pungnyu, which often are compiled in Samhyeonyukgak format. Jul-Pungnyu is subcatego-rized by Gyeongje and Hyangje, which were diverged by their regional and ancestral differences.
Gyeongje Jul-Pungnyu was originally institutionalized by Leewangjik-aakbu, the ancestral institu-tion of today’s The National Gugak Center. Gyeongje is played in Beopgeum style and it is known for its standardized melodies. On the other hand, Hyangje derives from rural parts of Korea in which many individual artists enjoyed playing music in Pungnyubang, spaces designated for play-ing music in traditional Korean houses. Hyangje is played with Sanjo Gayageum and it is charac-terized by its varying style of melodies (caused by improvisation).
Juk-pa is the granddaughter of Chang-jo Kim, the original creator of Sanjo. Since the age of eight, Juk-pa was taught to play the Pungnyu and Sanjo by her grandfather, and later continued by Sung-gi Han, the top pupil of Chang-jo Kim. The Individual Jul-Pungnyu played by many Sanjomaestros originates from Chang-jo Kim, Sung-gi Han, and Juk-pa. However, it is not only limited to such origin. Other various playing styles of individual Jul-Pungnyu also derives from Sang-geon Shim, Gi-ok Ahn, Nam-hee Jeong, Tae-hong Gang, Geum-yeon Seong, Yun-deok Kim, Tae-mun Kim, Hamdongjeongwol.
While other Jul-Pungnyu are played in tuning method of Sanjo, Juk-pa Pungnyu is played in dou-bleCheong-Tuning method, which starts its scale in 4 notes below. Juk-pa Pungnyu is differenti-ated by its grand base tone and exemplified in the famous musical piece called ‘Bollyeongsan’
Juk-pa emphasized to her pupils that the playing style of Pungnyu is very similar to Sanjo. But it shouldn’t sound complicated as vibrato is lighter in Pungnyu. In return, Hyangje Pungnyu is not played in Beopgeum, but with Sanjo Gayageum. Pungnyu has the nuance of folk music as it does include the vibrato and ornaments(Sigimsae). However, as its literal definition means the light breeze, it should be played elagantly.
Juk-pa Pungnyu starts with Daseureum and is continued by the composition of Bon-pungnyu(Bollyeongsan, Jungnyeongsan), Janpungnyu(Jallyeongsan, Garakjeji, Sanghyeondodeuri, Jandodeuri, Hahyeondodeuri, Yeombuldodeuri, Taryeong, Gunak), and posterior Pungnyu(Gyemyeon, Geulgeyangcheong, Ujo, Gutgeori). All Juk-pa Pungnyu in this album is har-monized with Daegeum, except Daseureum.
