블랙 메탈이라는 음악이 파생된 이래로, 전세계에 파급된 현 시점에서 우리는 더 이상 이 음악을 소수의 매니아들만의 전유물로만 분류할 수는 없을것이다. 악마에 대한 노골적인 찬양과 지지,이에 대한 흑마술적인 반 기독교적인 행위등은 ?GOTH“ 와 함께 하나의 문화로까지 정립되어 가고 있는 것이 최근 전세계적인 반향을 일으키고 있는 CRADLE OF FILTH 와 DIMMU BORGIR 의 성공을 통해 훌륭히 입증되고 있다.
현재 COF 는 SONY 를 통해 발매될 새 앨범에 이어 OZZFEST 2ND STAGE 의 헤드라이너라는 가히 상상조차 할수 없는 일들을 모든 블랙메탈팬들의 눈앞에 펼쳐보이고 있지만 어느 정도 퇴색해버린 이들의 멜로딕 블랙메탈의 오리지날리티에 목말라하는 블랙메탈 팬들에게 이미 ILLNATH 는 전 유럽 언더그라운드씬의 기대주로 추앙되어 왔다.
KING DIAMOND,ILLDISPOSED 이외에 익스트림음악의 불모지인 덴마크에서 날아온 이 5명의 블랙메탈러는 전세계 모든 익스트림음악 팬들에게 거대한 수확이 아닐수 없을것이다.
1997년 PETE(G/VO) 에 의해 처음 "FLAGELLATION" 으로 결성된 ILLNATH 는 다른 대부분의 덴마크 밴드들처럼 어떠한 레이블의 지지없이 자신들의 첫 데모 ?BEHIND THE EVIL“ 의 홍보에 주력해 전세계적인 프로모션을 벌였지만 동시에 드러머 CHRITIAN 가 탈퇴하고, SUSPERIA 의 드럼 TJODALV 의 도움으로 새로운 작업을 시작하면서 밴드명을 현재의 "ILLNATH" 로 개명하게 되었다.
기타 JOKUM 의 탈퇴와 보컬 SIMON 의 가입등 라인업 변경끝에 2001년 MCD ?ANGELIC VOICES CALLING“ 을 발매하면서 집중적인 앨범의 홍보는 물론 덴마크 데스메탈의 자존심 ILLDISPOSED 와 함께 덴마크 미니투어를 갖게 되었다.
이 결과로 인해 이들은 수 많은 레이블들의 접촉은 물론 자신들의 인지도를 더욱 전세계적으로 확장함은 물론 충성스러운 팬들을 확보 하게 되었다.
2002 년 BORSING STUDIO 에서 완성된 ILLNATH 의 첫 데뷔 앨범이자 한국 / 일본 에서만 선행 발매된 "CAST INTO FIELDS OF EVIL PLEASURE" 는 COF 와 DIMMU BORGIR 의 장점만을 압축하여 ILLNATH자신들만의 장엄하면서도 처절한, 그 어느 밴드도 흉내낼 수 없는 키보드 멜로디에 융합 해낸 수작이라는 평을 전세계 언론을 통해 얻고 있는데,아마 그 비중은 녹음당시 보컬인 SIMON (현재는 NARRENSCHIFF 로 교체) 의 DANI FILTH 스타일의 고음 샤우팅과 저음 그로울링은 물론 COF / DIMMU BORGIR / LOCK UP 출신의 NICK BAKER 를 연상시키는 드러밍또한 일조하고 있다고 볼 수 있다.
시종일관 몰아치는 블랙메탈 본연의 스피드 넘버 "ZETITE" 는 단순히 이들이 멜로디 우선주의적인 밴드가 아님을 증명함 으로서 앨범의 포문을 열고 있으며 앨범의 타이틀곡인 "CAST INTO..." 에서는 스피디한 그라인딩 리프와 함께 있지만 이들의 탄탄한 구성을 멜로딕한 키보드사운드, 여성 소프라노 보컬과 함께 훌륭히 완성하고 있어 본 앨범 최고의 백미로 자리하고 있으며 "TEMPORARY BORDERS" 나 "BRINGING DOWN THE WITCHING HOUR" 에서 역시 어둠의 매력과 함께 처절하면서도 다시금 벗어날 수 없게 만드는 영롱한 멜로디가 담긴 늪 속으로 청자 모두를 사로잡고 말 것이다.
블랙메탈과 멜로딕 데스적인 면모에 더해진 클래시컬한 요소, 데뷔 앨범이라 믿기 어려울 만큼 이들의 장래를 밝혀 주고 있는 훌륭한 곡들과 실력은 ILLNATH 를 단순히 "심포닉-멜로딕 블랙메탈" 이라는 장르에 안주하게 만들지 않고 있으며 모든 익스트림 음악의 팬들 이라면 반드시 기억해야만 하는 이름으로 자리할 것이다. .... ....

[The Mirror-song-lyric was finished the same day as we recorded it, and with it's rather experimental way of writing, it delivers a punch I never thought it would do. As I wrote the lyric I wondered how short I could do each line. I wanted every line to punch like the little freeze you get down your spine when you see a mirror that you didn't know was there, or suddenly see something strange in there, so i wrote: "The mirrors / The mirrors / That hides / The hideous / Me / The others / Banned! / Forbidden!"]
[I think mirrors are one of the most spooky things in my house, and I never stop being fascinated by them. Horror movies like Poltergeist 3 and the Changeling was good inspiration and hard fuel for a spooky boost. I think the song has quite some good punchlines, and really enjoyed working them out.] [- Narrenschiff]

[If you can imagine a spot in between worlds where one side describes the positive (yin, summer, daytime) and the other describes the opposite. We take the basic elements: Heaven and Hell. Then you imagine that the hordes of Hell have conquered this spot, and that from here they can see Heaven again, but don't really dare to go any further. This was the borderline, and now they are standing closer than ever, maybe to break loose on Heaven's green fields, maybe ready to stay on stand-by forever.]
[I think the idea of the song was just to make the borderland, but then I tended to fill it up with all kinds of nasty figures. ("Here they sacrifice the captured saints, here is where the torture awaits, here is where you abandon faith: The Devil's own Sinai"). I liked the idea of the Devil's Own Sinai, and if I was the Devil and wanted to poke God in the ribs by making my own Sinai, where would I build it but the brink of Heaven, just to say: "Yeah? Well look what I've got!". But I think my favourite line in this song must be " This is the common abyss for all alike, Where red melted stone flow a scorching river, Into the day in north, and in south; the night." I kind of like that image.]

[A most funny song to work on. It turned out quite infant and childish, with the sheer wickedness and evil which are found in classical King, Fulci and Argento movies and with a pinch of Tales from the Crypt. I don't really have a clue why the lyric turned out like it did, but I have a sneaking feeling that the song made me do it. [This lyric was done as a sort of homage to all the witches that died at the stakes in medieval Europe. The lyric was done some time before Narrenschiff joined the band, but it was a lyric that both he and I liked a lot so we decided to keep it as it was.The lyric is all about how the righteous people of the church killed all these women and the masses loved them for it. But now, today the witches are returning in great numbers and today we have no hallowed men to slay them for their knowledge. In the studio we found that it could do with a couple of lines and Narrenschiff added the final touch, so it's basically a joint effort. The title itself is partly inspired by Anne Rice and her Mayfair Witches.] [- Tobias]

[The idea for this lyric came from and old horror-movie, that I can't remember the name of. But it was about a guy who had his memories shared with those of a cat. He got away from the scientist guys and ran and ran but they caught up with him in the end nevertheless, and all the time he had these flashy images running through his mind that he knew wasn't his own.I wrote it because I found it a scary though that you were being experimented upon and you could do nothing about it.
