INTRODUCTION
‘When I Fall In Love’를 비롯해 ‘Too Young’, ‘Besame Mucho’, ‘(I Love You)For Sentimental Reasons’ 등 스탠더드 팝과 재즈를 오가는 그의 대표곡 40곡을 두 장의 CD에 담아내고 있어 그의 매력을 십분 느끼게 해주고 있다. 반세기 동안 이어진 달콤한 신선미 음악은 저마다 어떠한 순간을 가지고 있다. ‘위아 더 월드’는 88 올림픽 게임을 연상시키고 호세 펠리치아노의 ‘레인’은 비에 대한 상념과 일치한다. ‘위아 더 월드’는 88올림픽의 주제가였고, ‘레인’은 비가 오면 어김없이 라디오에서 흘러나오는 노래이다. 이렇듯 어느 음악을 들으면 우리의 상념은 은빛 날개를 타고 그 음악을 듣던 시절로 돌아간다.
우리의 의식이 음악을 통해 타임머신을 타고 순간이동하게 되는 것은 무슨 이유일까? 그것은 특정 음악을 듣던 상황이 음악과 함께 의식 속에 잠재되어 있다가 자극에 의해 부각되기 때문이다. 여기서 자극이란 특정음악이 들려오는 것을 말한다. 일종의 조건 반사라고나 할까? 조건 반사란 어떠한 상황이 여러 번 반복되면 나타나는 심리적 반응이다. 좋아하는 음악이란 누구나 여러 번 듣게 마련인지라 음악을 통한 조건 반사는 쉽게 성립된다. 음악과 함께 떠오르는 과거의 순간, 그것이 인간을 음악에 몰두하게 하는 요인 가운데 하나이다. 흔히 ‘사연 있는 음악’이라는 것은 바로 조건화된 음악을 말한다.
낫킹콜의 노래는 나의 의식을 초등학교 졸업 무렵부터 중학교 졸업 즈음의 시간으로 순간이동 시킨다. 그의 명곡들, 이를테면 ‘투영’, ‘모나리자’ 등은 1960년대 음악 방송의 단골 레퍼토리였다. 나는 그의 ‘덩쿨 장미’(Rambling rose)를 좋아했다. 이 노래는 중학교 시험을 앞두고 과외공부를 하던 이웃 동네의 일본식 이층집의 다다미 방을 연상시킨다. 시원한 코러스로 ‘람블링 로즈’라고 외치며 시작되는 이 노래는 무슨 연유에선지 70년대 이후 방송에서 사라지고 말았다. 나중에야 낫킹콜이 유명 재즈 피아니스트이며 인기를 끌던 싱어라는 것을 알았지만 그의 어느 앨범에서도 이 노래는 찾을 수 없었다.
나는 이 앨범의 해설을 부탁받고 자켓을 여는 순간, 첫머리에 이 노래가 있는 것을 보고 전율이 왔다. 더구나 이어지는 곡들 모두 그의 명곡들이 아닌가. 이렇게 이 음반은 내 라이브러리에 꽂힌 여러 장의 낫킹콜 앨범 가운데 가장 아끼는 음반이 되었다.
재즈 피아니스트 보다 대중가수로 더 알려진 낫킹콜은 스윙 재즈와 밥 재즈 사이에 잠재하는 연결고리를 이루어낸 피아니스트이다. 그의 40년대 재즈 앨범에서는 스윙과 밥의 양면성이 나타난다. 그의 트리오는 드럼이 없는 피아노, 기타, 베이스로 이루어진 독특한 형태이다. 당시는 기타, 피아노로 이루어진 트리오가 존재하지 않았기 때문에 그들은 사람들의 관심을 끌기에 충분했다. 기타리스트 오스카 무어(Oscar Moore), 베이시스트 웨슬리 프린스(Wesley Prince)가 트리오의 멤버였다. 이 편성은 그 시대의 사운드를 만들어 냈으며 많은 위대한 피아니스트들(아트 테이텀, 레니 트리스타노, 오스카 피터슨, 아마드 자말 등)에 의해 다시 계승되었다. 낫킹콜은 이러한 편성으로 50년대 중반까지 활동했다.
낫킹콜은 피아니스트로 성공을 거두었지만 보컬예술의 진수도 보여준다. 버터를 녹일 듯한 약간은 허스키하며 달콤한 보컬은 특유의 프레이징과 화법 그리고 부드러운 중년남성의 멋스러움과 편안함을 지니고 있다. 대중들은 이러한 그의 노래를 좋아해서 재즈 연주자였던 그를 팝 필드로 이끌어 냈다.
대중들의 인기와 함께 그는 스탠더드 팝 아티스트가 되었다. 그 이후, 흑인이지만 백인에게서도 많은 존경과 사랑을 받는 아티스트로 수 많은 히트곡을 불렀다. 'Too Young', 'Because You're Mine', 'Unforgettable', '(I love yoy) for sentimental reasons', 'When I Fall In Love' 등 유명한 사랑 노래들이 그를 통해 노래되었다. 그는 음악을 통해 흑인들의 자신감을 표현했으며, 흑인으로서는 첫 번째로 TV에 출연해 인종차별 철폐를 부르짖기도 했다.
낫킹콜의 본명은 나다니엘 아담스 콜이다. 1939년 '킹콜 트리오'란 재즈 그룹을 결성하며 재즈계에 데뷔했다. 그 이전부터 낫킹콜은 재즈 명곡인 ‘Sweet Lorraine'을 즐겨 불렀다. 어느 날 로스앤젤레스의 클럽에서 한 취객에게 이 노래를 불러 주었다. 그러자 그 취객은 오른손 엄지를 들어 보이며 그에게 '킹'이란 닉네임을 주었다. 나다니엘 아담스 콜이 낫킹콜이 되는 순간이다.
1917년 미국 알라바마주 버밍햄에서 태생으로 아버지는 침례교회 목사였고 어머니는 아버지 교회의 성가대 지휘자였다. 4살 때 온 가족이 시카고로 이주했다. 그는 11살 때부터 교회에서 오르간을 연주하면서 음악적 재능을 표출했다. 재즈 트럼페터 얼 하인즈(Earl Hines)의 음악을 처음 접한 그는 당시 시카고를 휩쓸었던 재즈로 인해 더욱 음악에 심취하게 된다.
1930년 초반에 '로열 듀크스'라는 밴드를 결성해 활동하기도 했던 그는 30년대 후반에 자신의 트리오를 구성하고 본격적인 무대에 서게 됐다. 1943년 이후 히트 곡들을 담은 앨범들을 발표하면서 인기를 다져갔다. 이후 연주보다는 노래로 더 많이 알려 졌다. 인기와 더불어 천대 받던 흑인들을 위해 많은 공연을 가지면서 그들을 대표하는 역할도 담당했다.
1940년대 그의 트리오는 'Sweet Lorraine', 'It ls Only A Paper Moon', '(Get Your Kicks) On Route 66', '(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons' 등 많은 히트 곡을 냈다. 1948년 프랭크 데볼 오케스트라와 함께한 'Nature Boy'와 또 다른 그의 히트 곡 'Mona Lisa'는 미국 차트에서 8주 동안 No.1을 차지하기도 했다. 그가 부른 곡들이 차트에서 정상을 차지하면서 그는 재즈 뮤지션이 아닌 팝가수로 변화된 양상을 보였다.
1965년 2월 15일, 47세의 젊은 나이에 폐암으로 세상을 떴다. 그러나 그의 영향은 지속적으로 남았다. 그의 히트곡 ‘Too Young’은 70년대 중반 마이클 잭슨과 쌍벽을 이루었던 백인 소년 싱어 도니 오스몬드에 의해 리바이벌 히트를 하기도 했다. 그의 달콤하고 매혹적인 목소리는 딸인 나탈리 콜(Natalie Cole)에게도 이어졌다. 1991년 나탈리 콜이 아버지의 노래인 ‘Unforgettable'에 자신의 노래를 오버더빙해 마치 아버지와 함께 부른 듯한 노래로 빅 히트를 기록했다. 이 녹음은 92년 그래미상 주요 부문 3개를 포함해 6개 부문의 상을 휩쓸게 되는데 이로써 낫킹콜의 존재가 다시 부각되기도 했다. 2000년 들어 'When I Fall In Love'과 '(I love you) for sentimental reasons'가 영화에 삽입곡으로 소개되어 다시 대중들의 사랑을 받기 시작했다.
이렇듯 50년이 지난 지금 그의 노래가 조금도 퇴색하지 않고 오히려 신선하게 다가오는 것은 무슨 이유일까? 나는 이에 대한 해답을 이 음반(2CD)에서 찾았다. 그 해답은 ‘노래에 담긴 따뜻한 인간미’였다.
